Are you tired of being the same ~Slutty Nurse~ or ~Sassy Witch~ every year for Halloween? I’m here to save you from the never-ending cycle of costume repeating! I looked down at my morning cuppa Snarky Tea and thought to myself, “what if?” … and so it happened. I took a trip to my local craft store and began the process to turn myself into *drumroll please* a TEA BAG!
Follow my step-by-step guide to get this look for yourself!
STEP 1: Get the goods.
The supply list for this costume is pretty simple, and some steps are definitely optional, but in true Snarky Tea fashion, I went all out.
THINGS YOU’LL NEED:
- One bundle of thick yarn
- 2-4 yards of mesh fabric (depending on how big you want your bag to be/your own size)
- Fabric Glue
- Small bouquet of faux flowers
- Sample fabric square in your favorite color
- Cardboard Square
- Needle & Thread
If you don’t want to include a string and tag on your bag, feel free to leave out the yarn, fabric sample, & cardboard square.
STEP 2: Create your tea blend - Whole Leaf Only 😉
Remove the petals and leaves from your faux flower bundles. The leaves are usually glued to the stems and are very easy to peel off. The flower petals can be pulled off of the stems and will be separated by small plastic pieces.
Have fun with this part & get creative with the type of tea you want to be! I modeled this costume after our Fierce B*tch blend!
STEP 3: Cut triangles to shape your tea pyramid.
Fold your mesh material in half hamburger style (big callback to elementary art classes) and cut along the folded edge to make a square (1). Then cut the square diagonally into two triangles (2). Just like you see in the photo above! The folded edge is now scrap and the triangles will be your main working material.
STEP 4: Start sewing your triangles.
This step is easy, but takes a minute. Line up and pin two triangles together, being sewing from top to bottom. Add on the two other sides, but remember to leave arm and neck holes!! (I definitely forgot this part and had to cut out and re-sew two sides 😂) Keep the bottom of the bag open.
STEP 5: Make your steeping string.
Cut 3 pieces of your thick yarn about as long as your arm. Knot together at the top, braid, and knot again at the bottom.
STEP 6: Sew on steeping string.
Sew your steeping string to the pyramid point!
STEP 8: Make your tea tag.
Cut out a square of cardboard. Use your fabric glue to wrap your fabric sample around the square. Sew to other end of steeping-string when dry.
STEP 7: Fill your bag with tea!
Lay down something like cardboard or wrapping paper to protect whatever surface you’re working on. Turn your pyramid inside out and start by laying one side down flat. Begin gluing your tea to your pyramid, upside down so the fully colored side is showing when you turn your pyramid right-side-out. (Pro-Tip: gently lift your mesh off of your protective surface after about 10-15 minutes so your tea doesn’t glue to the paper, too) This is a weekend-friendly project! The fabric glue takes around 2 hours to dry, so I recommend finding a good show to binge or making a trip to the grocery between gluing your tea to each side.
STEP 9: Bask in your glory
Once all your tea leaves have dried, flip your bag right-side-out and take in the beauty of the costume you’ve created!
I paired my costume with black leggings, a black turtleneck, and some black boots to make sure my outfit didn’t distract from my hard work. Plus, living in the midwest, I’m going to need these long sleeves to keep me warm!
