We could all use a laugh (or 1000) right now. Luckily for us, there are many kick-ass women with hilarious comedy specials on Netflix.
Instead of scrolling mindlessly for hours before giving up and rewatching season five of Gilmore Girls, why not try laughing at something new?
During our recent quarantine comedy binge-fest, we found the perfect specials to pair with our original Snarky Teas. All you need is hot water, a Netflix subscription, and a healthy sense of brewmor.
Sweet as F**k - Jenny Slate
“I’m a turtleneck as a person”
If you can get through Jenny Slate’s Netflix special Stage Fright without saying “aw”, we’ll give you 5 Snark Bucks.
Slate brings you into her world in a totally sweet and silly way that feels fresh compared to other comedy specials. Slate’s special takes you on a journey into her “haunted” childhood home. It introduces you to her sisters and her parents. It gives you exclusive access to her grandmother’s closet. It’s intimate, cozy, and contains so much depth, not unlike Jenny Slate herself.
If you drink Sweet as Fuck while watching this gem, you’re going to turn off the tv feeling like you’re buzzing with warmth.
Wake the F**k Up - Leslie Jones
“I’ve always been crazy. I never knew I was funny I just thought I was insane.”
Leslie Jones can most easily be recognized from the five seasons she spent lighting up the screen on Saturday Night Live. She brings that same electrifying energy to her Netflix special Time Machine.
Time Machine is the story of how Jones has developed over the past three decades. It’s a story of what it’s like to finally accept yourself for who you are as a woman. Jones is 52 now and she says she has mastered the art of not giving a fuck what people think, something we could all use a masterclass in.
Jones’ high energy level matches the high caffeine content of Wake the F**k up so well that if you pair them you’ll be ready to take on anything life throws at you.
Get Your A** in Bed - Aparna Nancherla
“What’s it like to be a woman in comedy? I would say it’s 1% jokes and 99% answering this question.”
Aparna Nancherla doesn’t have her own hour-long special on Netflix yet. Instead, her half-hour set can be found in season 2 of The Standups.
Nancherla has made a name for herself by not shying away from discussing anxiety and depression in her material. Instead, she is candid about her mental health struggles and gives us the key to being able to find the funny in everyday situations.
During her set she shows off her quirky side by bringing out a PowerPoint presentation and analyzing texts from her parents along with dating app messages from men.
We paired Nancherla’s special with Get Your A** in Bed not because it’s boring, but because her comedic style is so soothing. While Leslie Jones will hype you up, Aparna Nancherla will relax you and make you feel like you just had a half-hour cathartic talk with one of your closest friends.
Fierce Bitch - Joan Rivers
"Do not fuck with me. I was a bitch before you were born."
Joan Rivers passed away in 2014, but her comedic genius lives on in her Netflix comedy special Don’t Start With Me.
Rivers begins her Netflix special with a disclaimer that if she offends anyone of a certain race, sexuality, nationality, or gender, that person needs to lighten the fuck up. No one is exempt from Rivers’ no-nonsense punchlines. Some of her jokes will leave you with your mouth gaping open, thinking “she said what about Michael Jackson’s Neverland?”
Rivers carved the path for so many women in comedy. Watching her command the stage at 78 will leave no doubt that she was a fierce bitch, and even better, she was proud of it. So pour a cup of our Fierce Bitch tea and let’s cheers to that.
Calm the F**k Down - Sarah Silverman
“We’re all just a speck of dust on a speck of dust on a speck of dust hurling through nothing.”
Sarah Silverman’s Netflix special A Speck of Dust shows a different side to the powerhouse comedian. Sarah seems to let her guard down in this special and her act feels more like a conversation than a performance.
Silverman reminds us that we are all just specks of dust floating through space. All of the little things we worry about are mostly meaningless when we remember that. Silverman urges the audience to Calm the Fuck Down and enjoy life for what it is.
Namaste Motherf**ker - Taylor Tomlinson
“I’m halfway through my twenties and I am done with this shit”
Taylor Tomlinson is the youngest comedian on this list, and in many ways the most chill. While many 20-somethings go bat shit wild and party every night, Tomlinson says she’s already tired and ready to zen out in her 30’s.
Her special Quarter-Life Crisis displays a level of maturity beyond her 25 years. Her jokes emphasize a willingness to grow and the importance of self-awareness. That’s why she’s the perfect pairing for Namaste Motherf**er. Meditate on your life and your choices and drink a cup of tea with Taylor Tomlinson tonight.
Get Your Sh*t Together - Katherine Ryan
“I love men, but I feel that men are like dolphins in that they should only be enjoyed on holiday.”
Katherine Ryan’s Netflix special Glitter Room will have you re-evaluating your priorities. Ryan talks about being 35 and a single mom. Many of her jokes take a swing at the notion that women need to have a husband and 2.5 babies in order to be happy.
Glitter Room pairs perfectly with our Get Your Sh*t Together tea because it will get you thinking about what you want for your life instead of what society wants for you. At the end of the day, every woman has her own cup of tea.
